Chapter Thirteen
Josephine
* * *
I heard the stomping and whooping of pirate boots and pirate voices above me, and I waited. I could hardly stand being trapped in a washtub, waiting to hear the news. Where was Hook?
Then I heard a girl's sudden brave cry of, "Peter will come for me! Just you wait and see!"
Wendy!? They brought back Wendy?
As much as I didn't like Wendy, I hoped the pirates didn't frighten her too badly. I was getting concerned by the time I heard more boots, more voices.
Hook swung open the door to his room, beaming at me. Absolutely beaming. He swung his hook in complete triumph and said, "By George, Josephine, we actually hit Peter Pan where it hurts! Your map--" Now he waved a finger, still grinning, looking ten years younger. He crouched next to me. "It worked." His voice was low, husky, and so pleased that I immediately knew Wendy wouldn't capture his attention at all.
"You got the box?"
"Not the box. But--he has some feeling for that girl. I saw it in his eyes. He will bargain for her."
"Oh, yes, for her," I scowled.
"Who gives a damn?" Hook asked, tapping my chin with a few soft fingers, making me look up and not down. "Wendy's not fit to be a pirate. You should have seen her, Jo...still mending when she was all alone with no one even to nag her about it."
"That does sound ridiculous...and not surprising. I'm not sure Wendy would ever be a mermaid, after all."
"You're much more interesting." With his hand still at my chin, he lifted my face up just a degree higher, and kissed me.
The kiss was startling. It felt more intimate than pulling his cock out of his pants. My eyes stayed open, watching his flicker closed--but only for a moment. I think he would have left them closed, if I had closed mine. His warm mouth brushed mine, soft and deep, but only for a moment.
I noticed a few spots of blood on the edge of his sleeve. "Were you--" Then I stopped, remembering that his blood was not red.
His eyes hooded and he stood up, now strolling the room so his back was to me. "I got in a good strike," he said, his tone hardened.
He didn't want me to mention the blood.
"But he wasn't badly hurt?"
"Not yet."
"I hope you'll get him next time," I said, trying to show him that I was on his side, but the words came off flat.
He looked out the cabin window and huffed. "Next time..."
"What's in the box?" I asked.
"When I open it...I'll remember." He moved to the door, and I couldn't help but watch his long strides, his regal bearing. How had I ruined the kiss? Just from worrying that he might have bled?
"I'll bring you dinner shortly," he said.
"Wait--sir--is Wendy being treated all right?" I asked. "She's a very annoying girl, but I still don't think she deserves to be manhandled by pirates, so if you're a gentleman, I hope you'll protect her.
