The orb, as large as a melon, rose up on a twisted stalk of fleshy-looking cords and wires, unblinking and bloodshot.

Drake thought a moment. “Tell me, Bury; do the dwellers have a name they call the man that spoke on that ledge just now?”

“Yes,” the man replied, pausing in his descent, but with his back still to the captain.

“We call him Evil.”

In a basement room of one of the nearest buildings, a small gathering of the Free met. When they had exchanged both normal pleasantries and then concerns about the new edicts, they brought out a certain someone for Captain Action to see.

“Sean!”

He crushed the boy to him, bottled up emotion welling up and threatening to spill over. Sean Barrett rode the tide, glad to be back in his mentor’s presence and, for a moment, put all his fears behind him.

Drake then looked at Sean and shook his head ruefully. “Now how many episodes of Batman have you missed?”

“Don’t remind me,” said the boy glumly. “Cap, what’s going on here? That was him out there!”

“Not now, Sean. This isn’t the right time. It will come; trust me. You have to trust me.”

The boy was undeterred. “But he wants to kill you! I can’t believe he hasn’t done it already!”

“He just had the chance,” said Drake, glumly. “For all his intelligence, he’s a cold-blooded killer, but when he has me in his presence and he has something to torture me with, he’ll keep me around. To toy with me sadistically.”

Sean squinted, studying his mentor. “And does he, Cap? Have something over you?”

“Oh, yes,” whispered the captain, shaking his head. “Yes he does.”

The young man looked around, as if suddenly remembering something.

“Wait…where’s Yu-Yu?”

The beautiful defector and Sean had become close during the prepping of the mission, Drake remembered. Perhaps it wasn’t just the overwhelming urge to follow Captain Action halfway across the globe that had motivated such a stunt in the boy. Maybe he was growing up.

He also realized then why the kid had paid so much attention to every detail of the mission. All the better to follow along covertly. The scope of his resourcefulness humbled the captain.

“She’s in his hands, Sean. I’m not going to soft-pedal it. She’s not well, and she needs our help. That’s why you’ve got to listen to me from here on out and follow my every order to the letter. Uliana’s life might depend upon it.”

“Geez,” grumbled the boy, unable to look Drake in the face. “I really fouled things up, huh?”

“Sean, how did you get here? From the camp, I mean.”

“The Snow Streak, Cap,” he said plainly, as if he wondered why he’d be asked such a dumb question.

The captain ran a hand through his hair, glanced up at the valleymen gathered around the pair, eyes wide in wonder and confusion.

“The Snow…? Okay, never mind that now. But, don’t you see? You’ve provided us a way out of here, Sean. I couldn’t ask for anything better.”

Brightened, Sean Barrett asked what was next for them.

“First,”
