THE AIR OF EXCITEMENT during the ceremony made Xanthe feel sick. The top ten contenders were awarded with trophies, shaped like the statue in the park back home—a horned goat with a fish tail. Everyone else was presented with a copper medal hung from a crimson cord. Xanthe accepted her medal with little fanfare, shoved it into her pocket and turned to board the waiting train.

The number of people boarding the maglev back to Sydney was less than half of what it had been in the morning. Despite the greater choice in seats, Xanthe walked along to the final carriage.

Taking the same seat as in the morning, she rummaged around until she found Aidan’s bag. Pulling out the music player, she placed the buds in her ears and clicked play on the album from the 2020s that they had been listening to just a few hours ago. Just a few hours. It felt like a lifetime.

There were other things in the bag, too—a jumper, a water bottle, and a diary that she didn’t dare to open. Shaking slightly, Xanthe pulled the large jumper on and snuggled down in the seat, hugging her arms around herself.

She’d done it. She’d passed the Capricorn Trial. She tried to ignore the fact that in exactly one month’s time, she would be summoned to the next trial—Aquarius. And she wouldn’t have someone like Aidan to save her this time.
