An analysis is also shown correlating greenhouse emissions and operating profit (see Figure 9.8). A reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 1 percent is estimated to have a positive impact of 4 million euros on the operating profit.

The integrated report demonstrated that the holistic management approach targeting social, environmental, and financial aspects of the business in a parallel manner delivered value to all key stakeholders without trade-offs and enabled a more sustainable business model. Consistency among the company purpose, and social, environmental, and financial actions, enabled SAP to transform its size and historic success at high speed.

The transparency and progress attained by SAP was duly recognized. The company was awarded with external recognitions for its transformation and sustainability efforts resulting from its purpose. In 2012 and 2013, SAP led the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, a key benchmark for sustainability investment performance. The company also held top-ten spots on other indexes, including the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index, Carbon Performance Leadership Index, and the NASDAQ QMX CRD Global Sustainability 50 Index, in addition to other recognitions for its sustainability efforts.

The SAP case study is a clear and measurable illustration that a large multinational company from the developed world can change and grow as a result of adopting a higher sense of purpose. It shows that it is possible to integrate performance and progress by strengthening relationships with all stakeholders, embracing consistency, and keeping a holistic approach (economic, social, and environmental) to create a long-term competitive advantage.

The case study that we outline next is that of a relatively smaller company in the developing world. This case study suggests that the underlying principles of the holistic purpose-driven organization are likely applicable to other firms despite differences in geography, cultural context, industry, and firm size.
