Unable to back out now, Steve smiled quickly to cover his agony and held out his hand to her. "You must be the lucky lady."

She brightened instantly and shook his hand. "That's what they tell me."

Clearing his throat in anxiety, Mark introduced them.

When Steve stood back to judge her appearance, it seemed as if she was doing the same thing to him. If she knew Mark at all, then she had reasons to suspect him right from the start. But how well did she know him?

In the awkwardness of the meeting, Mark said, "Steve used to be an LAPD cop. Doesn't he still resemble one?"

"Oh?" She looked from Mark back to Steve skeptically.

"Mark has a thing for cops," Steve said, intentionally causing suspicion, "He keeps calling me Officer Miller."

Instantly Mark's face went beet red.

"Do you?" The bug of suspicion immediately bit her.

"Uh ... aren't you busy, Steve?" Mark made an anxious face at him, trying to give him a hint to leave.

"No. Are you two going to have lunch together? I'd love to join you."

Before Mark could protest, Sharon was accepting his invitation. Reading her face easily, Steve could well imagine the thoughts in her head. Know your competition? Keep your enemies close? Either one would do.

"I'll just hit the men's room and be right back," Steve said, pointing down the hall.

"Uh, yes. Me too." Mark nudged Sharon aside and avoided her look of mistrust. "Be right back, love."
