CHAPTER NINETEEN

I laid on the couch rolling the film canister over my fingers like a magician with a coin. Why was it in my bilge compartment? I didn’t own a camera. I eventually dozed off without any answers.

An all too familiar movie came into focus from a fade-to-black shot. Glendale Country Club appeared with Brian walking towards the camera, and like the person watching a movie, I was helpless to stop the chain of events on the screen or change the ending. I awoke right after the gunshot and rubbed my forehead with my fingertips as if trying to push the dark memory out of my skull.

A blurry figure sat next to me. I jumped back, not sure if I was still dreaming. The image of Carrie slowly came into focus. She had changed into shorts and a tee shirt, and her floral perfume was the only thing I could smell.

"Jeremy, your car was parked out front and I heard you yelling, so I let myself in. Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. It’s just this shooting. I can’t get away from it in my dreams.”

“I’m sorry.”

I waved off the comment as if it were no big deal.

"You need to keep your doors locked.”

I waved off her comment again. “If someone wants me, they don’t have to work hard to get at me, lock or no lock. How'd it go down at the docks after I left?"

"Well, I just left after two hours of filing paperwork. Henry Warren was the kid taken to the hospital. The Chief talked to Ricky’s mother and they decided it would be best if he sat the boy down in a quiet room and had a little one-on-one conversation to spook him so he wouldn’t attempt something like this again. Turns out Ricky heard about your boat sinking and wanted to dive on her to see if he could salvage anything. He claims he had nothing to do with stealing it and doesn’t know who did, and I believe him. We’re back to square one.”

“Figures. So you came by just to tell me that?” I said, hoping she would reveal something more.

“No. I thought that you looked a little pale back at the docks and I wanted to make sure you were okay.”

“Officer Summers, is that concern in your voice?” I said, blinking my eyelashes and bobbing my head. “My, how we have come so far in such a short period of time. At first you were on the verge of arresting me and now I’m cooking you dinner.”

“You are?”

“Help this old man up and I’ll make you the best meal a single man has ever cooked you.”

I reached my hand out and she pulled me up and off the couch with the same ease that she pulled Henry Warren out of the water. She smiled and slid her arm into mine and I led her outside onto the deck, which was wet from a brief shower. The ocean waves had calmed as well. I sparked up the grill and cooked some Cajun chicken, baked potatoes, and a Greek salad.
