Chapter Eleven

When she finished the call, she took the sauce off the stove, poured some in a dish and assembled the enchiladas, burning the tips of her fingers as she rolled up the chicken in the tortillas. She started the rice and made a dash for the shower.

Showered, dressed and made-up, Lori put the finishing touches on the dinner and hit the music on her phone. She liked country, and Cade? She had no idea anymore. She selected a classical playlist and turned it low to swirl in the background.

Cade showed up on time with a six-pack of beer and a big smile on his face.

When she ushered him inside, he said, “I could smell those chilies out on the street. You’re going to have every house on this side of the canals stopping by with an excuse.”

“Don’t forget. The last time I made these for you, I had my mom’s help. This time I’m flying solo.” She took the six-pack from him. “Want one?”

He slipped two from the carton and followed her to the kitchen. While she stuck the beer in the fridge, he twisted off the caps. “Glass?”

She answered, “Always tastes better from the bottle.”

Cade buzzed around the stove, lifting lids and sniffing the air. “Rice, beans. I’m in heaven.”

“Just a warning.” She held up her finger. “This isn’t as homemade as my mom’s.”

“Still looks great. I’ll set the table.” He pulled some plates out of the cupboard and carried them to the table. “How is your mom?”

Lori ladled the beans into a bowl and grabbed a couple of serving spoons. “She’s doing okay. She’s in Mexico now with my grandmother—her mother.”

“Do you think she’ll stay there?”

“Not sure. My abuela is ill. When she passes...” she shrugged “...Mom might move back here.”

They squeezed past each other, as she headed toward the table and he went back to the kitchen for silverware. “I always liked your mom, but I got the impression she wasn’t too impressed with me.”

A smile tugged at Lori’s lips, as she turned with a hand on her hip. “My mom liked you. She just wanted me to be careful around you—thought you were a little too smooth for a high school boy.”

“Me?” Cade slapped his hand against his chest. “You never told her about all my awkwardness.”

“That was the problem. I sang your praises so much, she warned me nobody was that perfect.”

“She was right about that.” Cade held up a handful of forks and knives. “Do we need spoons?”

“Just one for the salsa.”

They did a little dance in the kitchen again, as she lifted the steaming pan of enchiladas from the oven with a pair of pot holders. “Let me serve you at the table, so you don’t mess up my creation. They might fall apart.”

“We’re eating them anyway, aren’t we?” He pulled out her chair and put her beer next to her plate.

She smacked him with a pot holder. “Just let me do it.”

She pulled her phone from her back pocket and placed it on the table.
