One of the worst things about fighting with my best friends was the crushing need to know what they were doing, but not being able to ask. Mollie never really kept up on social media, but even Vesta’s page was silent. No status updates, no photos. Bryce’s was the same.

I couldn’t even social media stalk them to pass the time, to fume over what they were doing without me. Rude.

So instead, I drove.

I liked driving around Addison, a city about fifteen minutes outside of Greenville. I liked weaving through the fancy neighborhoods. Everyone out here was either a lawyer or a doctor or some fancy politician, and I liked looking at the grand houses, trying to picture what kinds of families lived inside. The lawns were all manicured, snow scraped expertly off the black-topped driveways. Luxury cars were almost always secured inside an attached garage, out of sight and out of reach from even the idea of rust.

A part of me wondered what it’d be like to grow up here, surrounded by money. The fanciest thing we owned was this convertible, and its resale value depreciated every single time I backed it out of the garage. But what would it be like to have pictures on the walls worth more than a down payment on a house? What would it be like to drive somewhere and have valet, to have someone come in and clean your house for you, to go to lavish galas?

Mollie used to live in Addison up until last May, before her dad got a new job and downsized. Taking them out of their private school, moving them to Greenville a “quaint lifestyle.” In some ways, Greenville was quaint. The houses were smaller, the stores were a bit more Mom and Pop than chain franchises. There was a better sense of community in Greenville, so I understood why Mr. Brooks would want to move here, closer to this school.

If I lived in a beautiful house like the ones I drove past, I’d hate to have to move. I’d hate to have to leave this neighborhood, especially since they salted their roads like pros. Greenville needed to take notes.

I pulled the convertible into the closest gas station, sidling up beside a pump. On the other side of the pump, a girl in a pretty floral-printed suit stood in front of a shiny black SUV, her trench coat unbuttoned. Her dark hair was cut in a pixie, eyes shielded by sleek glasses. I wondered how much of her outfit was designer. She looked like a movie star.

She caught me spying, flashing me a smile full of teeth. “I love that coat. Is that Gilfman?”

I glanced down at the red and white plaid coat I had on, nodding. I’d never been a girl who paid attention to name brands, but I did know that. While I slid the fuel nozzle into the car, I said, “I think it’s from a few years ago.”

Which probably wasn’t the best thing to say,
