Unfortunately, I can only share with you the techniques of fire making. The mechanical skills you need to implement these techniques must be acquired through diligent practice. So don’t wait until the first rainy or windy day of a trip to try these procedures. Get out and practice them now, while they’re fresh in your mind.

Keep the campfires burning. And don’t forget to put them out when you leave!

BEARS

Kay Henry, formerly of the Mad River Canoe Company describes a grizzly encounter along Alaska’s Koyukuk River:

When we saw the grizzly he was walking toward us along the riverbank about 300 yards from where we were standing. He wasn’t aware of us; he just ambled along, stopping occasionally to dig for ground squirrels. His silvery coat shimmered with every step. We watched for several minutes, fascinated. Ultimately we decided he’d come close enough, so we naively rang our bear bells to scare him away. He never changed course, never missed a step. In unison we yelled. Nothing. Then I remembered my tiny compressed air horn (the type used to call a yacht club to launch). That did it. He stopped, ran back into the woods, then a moment later returned to identify the problem. Finally he seemed satisfied that we posed no threat, and slowly, on his own terms, he ambled off. We hadn’t scared him away; he chose to leave!
