I woke up before Jackson did in the morning. It was still before dawn since the winter sun didn't come up until later, but there was enough light coming in from the street lights outside that I could see him pretty clearly. His handsome face was turned towards me, his lips parted ever so slightly. He hadn't put a shirt on last night so his chest was still bare, his muscles clearly defined even in sleep.

It had been a long time since I'd spent the whole night with a man. In the last few years, whenever I'd had sex with someone, I'd gone to their place so that I could leave afterwards and not have to worry about kicking them out of my flat or any awkward scenes in the morning. If they asked for my number, I came up with an excuse not to give it to them.

I left before they had a chance to leave me. It was the best way. My heart might be cold and a little lonely, but at least it wasn't broken.

That had been my failsafe method for years, but when Jackson asked me to stay over last night, I hadn't had to try too hard to convince myself it would be okay.

We were only pretending, I reminded myself. We were playing at being in a relationship to see what it would be like, me from the emotional side and him from the physical. So what could it hurt to indulge him on this one thing? He was being more than open with me, after all.

And besides, the more time we spent together, the greater chance there was for something to go wrong, for him to realize this wasn't what he wanted after all. And though the thought of it made my heart ache, I almost wished it would happen sooner rather than later, before my feelings for him got any stronger than they were already starting to.

When we were standing outside that house last night and he told me he didn't want to buy it without consulting the woman he'd share it with, I knew what he was getting at. He wanted to know what I thought of it. He was implying that I might be that woman. And when I looked back at the house, for a moment I could almost picture it, he and I sitting in the living room with the big window onto the street, maybe even with him holding a baby on his lap, just like Cole had been doing earlier that night.

For a second, it almost seemed possible.

But how could Jackson be so sure that I was that woman after spending such a small amount of time with me? Really, in the grand scheme of things, we didn't know each other all that well. Yes, we got along well, and yes, there was an electric attraction between us. And yes, I had told him things about myself that most people don't know. But there were still so many things he didn't know, things he might not trip over for years.
