A coat of white paint and new doors gave the large, free-standing clothing cabinets a more traditional look that better matched the Mission-style bed. Petite tables tuck in between the cabinets and the bed to hold books and bedside necessities.

I replaced the single large dark-stained dresser with store-bought three-drawer chests that I customized with new, sparkly handles and glass-covered sisal tops.

Style Elements

• The paneled, Mission-style headboard and footboard and the dark wood floors gave me a starting point for finishes. To balance the dark wood tones, I brought in light with white cabinetry, paint, and bedding.

• To work with the lines of the bed, I retrofitted the old mirror-fronted wardrobes with raised-panel doors and traditional-style glass panes. I gave the out-of-the-box dressers a super-high-end look by adding shiny modern pulls and sisal wallpaper capped with glass for the tops.

• Fabrics in shades of pear, moss, brown, and beige add a punch of fresh, earthy color throughout the space. Because Damon and Jodie share the bedroom with two big dogs, I selected dog-friendly fabrics in tones similar to their coats for the love seat and armchair in the lounge area.

• Tiny bedside tables blend with the wood of the headboard. To free up table space, I installed tiered pendant lamps over the side tables—a little touch of glamour against the rustic brick wall.

• I kept the window treatments clean and simple to match the rugged, rustic feeling of the exposed brick. Woven-grass blinds with blackout lining block light so Damon and Jodie can sleep late after a hard night’s work. Green linen panels with a grommet edge just kiss the floor and provide softness.
