The Call

When the anthem began blaring in the morning, Kevin opened his eyes wide. He was ready. He was the first one to jump out of bed and the only one to do it with such alacrity. The other campers sluggishly rubbed their eyes and dragged themselves to their lockers.

Kevin and Mark exchanged looks of determination before nodding at each other. After their morning routines of brushing their teeth, donning their uniforms, and making their beds, the campers began making their way out, one by one. Kevin overheard one of the campers saying they still had time since it was only a little after eight, which had him realizing why he was feeling so rested. Mark later confirmed to him that the campers woke up a little later on the weekends. Kevin was excited and nervous. Today was the day. If everything went according to plan, he would be out of here tonight. His mind raced back to the first day when he arrived, six days ago. Everything about that day – getting the uniform, being given a number in his cabin, seeing the campers' confused glares for the first time when he arrived; all of it seemed like just a distant memory. He felt like that day happened months ago.

What should have been only one day in his hellhole of a camp turned into an entire week, but he would stay no longer. He refused to be kept here as their prisoner and their slave. He was happy to have Mark on his side through this endeavor. He had already started imagining their ride back home. Henry would laugh at Kevin for being in the detention house and would mention how he would have loved to give a bitch slap to Dwight and the detention counselors. Quentin would be quiet for the most part while driving. He was scary when Kevin first met him, but he soon realized that Quentin was just the strong silent type.

Amy would attentively listen to every detail Kevin shared, relieved to see him safe. Would she come with Henry? Would she even be worried about him? And what would they do when they got back? They couldn't just leave the others in the camp. Not to mention they would probably be punished once the counselors discovered that Kevin and Mark were missing. Kevin vowed to come back to rescue them, but a doubtful thought gnawed at his mind – would they even want to escape?

A few minutes after all the campers had come out of their cabins, two figures appeared in the distance, coming in the direction of the campers. The slim and tall figure was unmistakably Mr. Adams, whereas the somewhat shorter and much bulkier one was Zit-faced Dwight.

"Huh, that's weird. Mr. Adams never comes to pick us up here on the weekends," Mark muttered.

It sounded like he was talking to himself, but since Kevin heard him, he asked, "What do you mean?"

Mark jerked his head in Kevin's direction as if he was surprised that he was heard.
