Chapter 6

Mariana huddled in her chair, staring at Terk. “They’re talking,” she murmured.

He nodded, his gaze boring into hers. “I can hear that. Can you make out any of the words?”

She frowned. “They’re shouting insults at each other,” she noted, with a caustic tone, “or at least Sean’s insulting Cal.”

Terk’s lips twitched. “You sound surprised.”

She shook her head. “I shouldn’t be, should I?”

“Nope,” he agreed quietly. “It’s fairly typical.”

“I guess,” she muttered, as she closed her eyes, wishing that this would all just go away. “These gifts don’t make it any easier, do they?”

“No, of course not,” he replied. “You’re in a position to hear some of what’s going on, yet not able to do anything about it. You can see some of what’s going on around him but not the whole picture.”

She opened her eyes again to see that the other women had gathered closer. “I’m sorry. I’m not trying to be difficult. I’m not used to sharing what I overhear.”

“You’re doing fine. This isn’t an easy thing,” Tasha exclaimed. “I’ve worked with Terk for years, and I saw several of the men brought on board and understood what they were going through as he taught them. But honestly, you’re the first female.”

“At the same time, we didn’t expect to have any abilities either. So what is bringing it on?” Mariana exclaimed, looking over at Terk.

“Well, you said you had some experiences before.”

“Sure, but nothing like this,” she murmured. “And it’s not like I had much of a relationship with Cal before.”

Terk gave her a droll look.

She flushed. “Okay, fine, but he didn’t want me around.”

“He didn’t want you around to keep you safe,” he corrected.

She raised both hands in mock surrender. “Whatever. I’m not suspecting his motives, just his methodology.”

At that, Tasha burst out laughing. “Oh my gosh, that’s good. You keep believing that.”

Mariana glared at her. “Am I being a fool?” she asked. “Am I—”

“No,” Tasha interrupted. “But the relationships we have all found are extremely intense and bonded in a way. As in fated.”

Raising an eyebrow, Mariana asked, “Well, if that’s the case, why was Cal wasting so much damn time?”

“I had the same problem,” Tasha shared. “Damon avoided me and everything to do with me because he didn’t want to get involved with someone at work and didn’t want me to get hurt from the association either. So, as soon as this was all being shut down, we were both privately making plans to see whether something was there between us or not. Although it didn’t get that far, I was planning on talking to him, and he was planning on talking to me, but we never did, … until after the attack.”

“Right.” Mariana nodded. “I did get a message from Calum—before the accident—saying that he wanted to see me.”

“Well, that’s good, right?”

“Except, for all I know,” she replied, “he just wanted to see his son. He had visited Little Calum occasionally before.” She added, “And he knew about him from the first, if anybody wonders.
