Stomp Out Your Stress

Secret Step in time with the crowd

Tradition Dabke folk dance Date Any time Originated in Lebanon

Banish the blues by sweating it out on the dance floor with your friends. The foot-stomping dabke is the strut-your-stuff stress remedy that doesn’t require a prescription.

The folk dance is said to have originated in Lebanon’s annual roof-rebuilding practice, back when the roofs were made from mud and straw. Once a year villagers would gather on top of each other’s homes and, forming a line, shuffle across the roof, stamping in uniform rhythm to compact the dirt covering.

This communal synchronised stomping gradually made its way off the rafters and into the national culture, and today is performed throughout the Middle East in various forms. Just like its early roof-fixing beginnings, the dabke is a group activity. Everyone is invited to link arms and join the dance line, merrily stamping their way across the floor. Although it is traditionally performed at weddings and other celebratory occasions, in Lebanon it is just as common to see a spontaneous dabke take over the dance floor late at night in a bar.

Getting your groove on is a fail-safe way to lift your mood and restore tranquillity. Next time you feel the pressure start to build, grab your friends for some spur-of-the-moment dancing. A good foot-kicking boogie is sure to set your antenna back to calm.
