CHAPTER 3

The tall grass welcomed her as she came to a stop at the edge of the clearing. Standing before her was a sight that would bring tears to her eyes no matter what form she took. The pale gray eyes that looked back at her were filled with a love she hadn't felt in years. She rushed forward pressing her flank to the soft coal-black fur of her father's wolf. His head rubbed against her side. She let out a sorrow-filled cry.

His tongue came out to lick at the moisture dripping down her fur. Hush child, a voice whispered around her. Do not mourn me.

Father, she called out to him.

Yes, Daughter, he responded. I am here. I am always here.

I miss you so much, she told him. You and Mother.

We miss you too but know that we surround you every day.

I hate that you died. Words she had never expressed resounded in the air. I hate that I lost you.

You could never lose us. He moved until they were facing each other. We are where we have always been. In your heart.

But you are not here, and you are needed so much, she told him. Johain has done things I never would have believed. The pack is falling apart. They want me to lead. To fix what he has broken but I can't. I'm not you.

There is no need for you to be me. There was a smile on his face. All that is needed is for you to be you.

I’m not a leader.

You are my daughter. He stood proudly before her. You are the daughter of a chief; an alpha. My blood and that of our ancestors runs through your veins. You were born to be a leader.

Johain was but not me.

What scares you, my daughter?

That I am not strong enough. She hung her head. That I can’t be the leader that you were. I cannot do this alone and don’t want to disappoint you.

You are stronger than you know, and you are not alone, he told her. You have love and respect, and there is no way that you could ever disappoint me.

What if I make things worse? she asked. What if I hurt those that I’m supposed to care for?

All great leaders worry about those things, he shared. That is what makes them great. If you are not concerned that you will make a mistake then you will make many. If you do not worry about those you should care for then you do not care for them enough. Listen to your heart. It will guide you when needed. Listen to your instincts, for they will lead you where you need to go.

What about Johain?

Your brother will find his way to where he is going without you, her father told her. He has made his own decisions and his path has been set. His future carved. You cannot let his actions affect yours.

But he is your rightful heir.

He is heir to what he has wrought, but you my child, my blood, are my heir.
