“YOU’LL like Nice at this time of year,” said Hunter. “Everybody does.”

“You’re giving me a holiday?” Callan asked.

“Holiday?” Hunter considered the word. He might never have heard it before. “Oh—holiday. No, of course not. You wouldn’t know what to do with it.”

“What then?”

“Drugs,” said Hunter, “and an addict.”

Callan grimaced. He hated drug cases.

“A girl,” said Hunter. “A girl called Angela Lawson. Rather a nice girl before she got on to heroin. A little inadequate perhaps.”

“They always are,” said Callan. “That’s why they get on to it. Who’s her pusher?”

“Ultimately,” said Hunter, “the S.S.D.”

The S.S.D. were an East German operation and hard enough to make the KGB nervous.

“The S.S.D.” said Callan. “That’s all I needed.”

“It’s her father you see,” said Hunter. “Her father’s a general. Knowledgeable sort of chap—knows all about our NATO commitments and so on. Contingency plans, that sort of thing. Stuff the S.S.D. would very much like to know.”

“Does he know his daughter’s on heroin?” Callan asked.

“It would seem so,” said Hunter.

“Then why doesn’t he do something about it?”

Hunter sighed. “It would also seem,” he said, “that he loves her.”

He reached out for a file—yellow cover, surveillance only—and threw it to Callan.

“Read it and come back for a chat,” he said Callan scooped it up and stood, ready to leave. “There’s just one thing,” said Hunter. “The general really is very important. If you can’t think of another way, Miss Lawson goes into a red file.”

A red file meant death and both men knew it.

“And I’ll still be running the operation?” For once Hunter didn’t look at him.

“There’s nobody else I could trust to evaluate the necessity for a killing,” he said.
