'Well, my lovely, have you enjoyed yourself?' asked Mrs Owen, when Jazzy returned the key to the shearers' cottage.

'Very much.'

'That's nice. You haven't been too lonely, then?'

'No, I've had company.'

'Ah, that old dog of yours.'

'Yes, Pie. And Davy Miller.' Jazzy could feel a blush blooming on her cheeks and she ducked her head to hide her embarrassment.

'Davy Miller? Oh no, my lovely, he's been gone a while.'

'He's back now. In fact I saw him just this morning.'

'No, no, you can't have. Davy died in those terrible bushfires that came through these parts two years ago. It was terrible. He was fighting up there in the bush and got cut off from the others. He didn't stand a chance.'

'But I saw him!'

'You must have been mistaken, love. It must've been somebody else.'

Jazzy shivered and placed a protective hand over her belly. No, it had been Davy all right. It was old Mrs Owen who was mistaken.
