Cassandra was waiting when we reached the house. She looked nervous.

“Thank you Cassandra. But I can’t. It’s too much, I’m sorry.” I looked over her head, my lips pressed hard together and my nose stinging.

“Oh,” she whispered. “It was just a silly idea. I thought you might think about it. I so much want you to be happy, and I can’t bear you not to have your own baby.”

“It wouldn’t be my own baby though, would it.”

“It would, it would. It would be Ben’s and yours. Lily wasn’t your own… wasn’t genetically yours either, and that didn’t matter at all. I need to do this for you. I want to. Please don’t say no just yet. Think about it for a while.”

“Giving me a baby won’t change how I feel about losing Lily. You think you can make everything right, but you can’t. Not this time.” I jumped as Sebastian’s hand gripped my arm.

“Steady on, Olivia. How about we leave this for now.”

I nodded and turned away, blocking out Cassandra’s white face.
