Big Daddy
B.D. tried not to let the situation get to him, but it was eating him alive. As he walked along the grounds of the farm with his son, he knew he should be happy.
His son had come to visit, but being lied to by the one person he had come to trust was disappointing, to say the least.
"Earth to dad," said Jake waving in front of his face. Whiffs of his son's hot breath in the cold air feathered in B.D.'s face.
Coming to his senses, B.D. said, "Huh?" He stuffed his hands in his jacket pockets and planted his feet in the gravel trail.
Jake chuckled. "I said, 'are you eating'? You look thin." He didn't respond immediately, just listened to the ducks quacking in the distance.
B.D. gave him a warm smile. It was nice to have a one-on-one conversation with his son. It had been so long. "Oh, yeah. Just been a little under the weather."
He didn't want to get into his illness. The last thing he needed was his son worrying about him.
A father is supposed to be strong. A father is supposed to protect his children. If they had any idea the medical problems he was going through, it would ruin all of that.
Jake cleared his throat. "Okay. You like Alberto?"
"He's fine." What a question to ask. What a time to ask.
Normally, if someone had upset him that much he would have written them off and moved on. It's just that there was something about the guy that stayed with B.D. no matter how much he tried to shake it.
Jake laughed. "Fine? Driving you insane already." His son had no idea. Alberto drove him wild, day and night he was the only person who he could think of. Since he met the young man, he hadn't been able to think straight.
He sighed. "Sometimes."
A grin spread across his face thinking about how in the few weeks Alberto had been there, he'd been so anal about cleaning every nook and cranny.
Alberto had the domestic gene that had been absent from B.D.'s life. He'd insisted on everything being perfect in the farmhouse as if it were his own. B.D. had loved that idea and yet, now everything had changed.
Jake stared at the ground, deep in thought. "Glad someone's taking care of you."
Gravel crunched below their shoes as they walked along the property. It'd been so long since he'd done this with his son and he missed it.
There was a time when he thought they were getting close, when his Jake was a mini-him, but his mother’s situation had changed everything.
He had to ask. "Why now?" Jake looked up at him. It was clear what B.D. referred to. It was what he'd been wondering since he'd arrived this morning.
Jake took a nice long breath. "Had some stuff to talk to Alberto about." He forced a smile. There was a lot more to it than he was letting on and B.D. was hurt that he wasn't more forthcoming with him.
He stopped and looked at his son with concern.
