Chapter 35: All about True Love

"Yes, that was precisely why I insisted on tomorrow," Gerard said to the phone when Macy stepped out of the bathroom, drying her hair with the towel and throwing a quizzical glance at him. He didn't notice her, adding, "If they are offended by it, that's their problem."

Perhaps her allergic reaction caused amnesia, or Macy, his assistant, had no idea what he was talking about. Yet she could hardly process the last eight hours anyway.

After he'd brought her home, which she found ridiculously bizarre after her dizziness wore off, he'd continued working as if he had been still at the office. Meetings, phone calls, actual editing, and arrangement of the pages. Without the presence of a work phone that she was tasked to answer, she'd spent most of the day on the sofa. Her head had been spinning way too much to find a way to sabotage him.

She wasn't sure when or how, but, at one point, she must have fallen asleep because she'd woken up with Gerard's gray jacket covering her and Gerard cooking dinner for them. The stupidity of the sight raised to a new level when her eyes traveled onto him to notice his half-unbuttoned shirt and the black tie dangling over his shoulders.

And now, he sat on her navy sofa, talking on the phone and painting a picture as if he was in his own house. She didn't know what to think about it at all. Out of all the conspiracy theories and mysteries, this one was by far the most hard-to-believe one that intrigued her.

"I don't care," Gerard stated, voice getting dangerously low, "I want the whole press there. Invite a few big names while you are at it."

Tossing the towel onto the counter in the bathroom, Macy strolled toward him, causing his attention to suddenly shift to her. He added before hanging up, "I'll talk to you tomorrow."

"Who was it?" Macy questioned as soon as he placed the phone down on the glass coffee table.

His gaze absently wandered down to the black floral sundress she'd just put on. He didn't even seem to hear her question. However, Macy could read the vague frown on his features and see that he was troubled. That sight alone should have amused her. Gods, the allergy must have been pretty strong if she was casually worried about him.

"It was Mark. I'm throwing a cocktail party tomorrow at the yacht club, and he is helping me to sort out the guest list," Gerard murmured pensively, deliberately looking away when Macy widened her eyes at him.

"Tomorrow?" She emphasized incredulously, approaching him and putting her hands on her hips. "You are invited to the Blanchard Hotel's 99th anniversary tomorrow."

"Am I?" He shot her a mock smirk, proving how that was the point.

She gaped at him. "And you want the whole press there," she muttered in realization, "because—"

"I want my cocktail party to be on the front pages, not their extravagant ball," he completed her words, his smirk never wavering as he tilted his head.
