Item 5aa is an example of an E3b4 Shelved Variant bead which retains quite a bit of the structural shelf and looks like a C2 Split Drilled bead.

E3c. Rough Large-Lipped (Item 5bb)

Description: E3c beads are very large half-shell beads and include the structural shelf (interior view) but usually lack the funnel constriction of the basal canal fold. Edges are either partially ground or chipped.

Metrics: Although Bennyhoff and Hughes (1987:129) report a fairly large average perforation diameter (2.0 mm), examples in bead lots studied for this Guide have cylindrical needle-drilled perforations under 1.5 mm in diameter.

Similar Beads: Though in some ways E3c beads are similar to large examples of Type C2 Shelved Punched beads, comparison of the replica examples should preclude confusion of the two.

Temporal Significance: This type is an Historic-period marker in southern California.
