Chapter 5

William didn’t understand how they could convict a man who had just lost his wife. And since it was their fault in the first place, blaming it on her wasn’t very nice either. So what if she was a druggy? It wasn’t anyone’s business but their own. Looking down at the notes in front of him that this court-appointed attorney had given him, he wondered what the man would say to him when he figured out he could neither read nor write. That was his wife’s job too.

“Mr. Talbot, are you listening to the proceedings that are going on here today?” He said he was trying to but wasn’t understanding much of it. “What part do you not understand?”

“How come I’m being here in this courtroom when some bastard stole my children from me, and he’s out running around like that’s okay. My wife is dead now, and I got to sit here in this courtroom and listen to all this crap because some shit head decided that I’m a menace to the community.” The judge told him to watch his language. “I’m trying to do that. You already told me to do that before. But like I was saying, I lost my wife, my kids and—hell, I mean heck, I was going to be a granddaddy too. I ain’t seen hide nor hair of my kids since they were taken from me.”

“Your honor, I can clear some things up for Mr. Talbot if you’ll allow me to.” The judge asked the woman who she was. “Special Forces Major Rose Thimble, Medical Physician for the United States Armed Forces. I’ve been helping with the cases that Mr. Talbot is talking about. And as such, I’ve been briefed on all manners of this case so that I could answer any questions that you or the defendant might have pertaining to this case. If that is all right with you, your honor.”

“Yes, Major. Please clear this up. I haven’t been able to review any of the files I’ve been given because this was last minute. This will, I’m assuming, make things run more smoothly for all parties in this case.” They swore the woman in and then asked her if she was going to be telling the truth. Once she said yes, they sat her down in the chair next to the judge. “Now. Which part are you familiar with, Major?”

“All of it. If you’d not mind, I’m going to refer to my notes so that I get the names correct.” He told her to go ahead, and William felt like she was sucking up for some reason. “Mr. Talbot had two daughters, Melissa Talbot, aged fourteen and Elizabeth Talbot, aged fifteen. The grandchildren that he was referring to were given birth five days ago, and Ms. Elizabeth, unfortunately, passed away while giving birth to a set of twins. The physician on duty was myself, and I did everything I could to save her. However, she was much too young
