Rutger took us into a room where Gabriel could have complete privacy. Several women brought in thick blankets, food, and water, as well as treats for him. We spread the blankets across the cold dirt floor and placed the cube on them. When everyone was gone, Gabriel sat down on them and organized his game, moving the pieces around, rearranging and shifting them back and forth as though he wasn’t quite sure. Then he would pick them up, examine them closely, and return them to the board. After a moment, he moved the pieces around again.

He hadn’t touched the cube.

Alek said, “You should sit down and talk to him. Try to get him interested in it.”

I sat down beside Gabriel and pointed to it. Nim looked on from the other side of the blankets and didn’t say a word.

“Gabriel, there’s a clue inside that cube that we need to find.” I turned to face him, but he was still arranging his game pieces across the board. “What do you think? Can you help us?” When he didn’t answer, I took the cube and placed it in his hands. “Maybe if you can figure out how to open it, I will be able to understand what is inside. We could work as a team to find the Casket so we can stop the Kruillians.”

He pulled at the scarf, looked at me, then focused on the cube. He brought the cube close to his face, turning it over in his small hands as he examined each side. As he did this, his eyes began to pulse.

I wanted to ask what he saw, but I didn’t speak. Alek and I watched his eyes brighten and dim as he traced the intricate grooves on the outside edges of the box. Then he put the cube in the middle of his Chokmah board and began to arrange the small wooden pieces filled with numbers and pictures around it.

The door opened, and Rutger entered quietly. Gabriel didn’t look up or seem to notice his presence. He was totally focused on what he was doing on the Chokmah board. Rutger remained near the door and watched for a few moments, then he moved slowly into the room and sat cross-legged on the blankets. He said nothing but continued observing, taking in how the boy rearranged the wooden tiles and placed them in rows and circles around the cube.

Gabriel picked up the cube again. Then he appeared to be pinching the corners of the cube with his index finger and thumb. He did this to each corner at least three times and then he began to turn the upper section as though opening the lid of a jar. After two turns, he pulled the cube apart and looked inside. Alek and I moved closer.

I wanted to know what was inside.

Rutger turned and looked at me, one eyebrow raised. He nodded before turning to watch Gabriel again.

Gabriel didn’t look like any other seven-year-old right now. His skin was pale, and his deep blue eyes continually pulsed as he studied the cube and the game board.
