Twenty-One

Sadie

There’s no mistaking that boom and shudder. I rise from my shallow sleep, blinking my eyes hard to try and clear my head. The guys are all up and shouting at each other. Cerene is just getting to her feet. I try to, but a massive quake hits us, and I fall straight back down again.

“We have to get out of here,” I scream, feeling the hundreds of tons of rock above my head, ready to crush us all. I know screaming is useless at this point, but it’s instinctive.

No one hears me. I struggle to my feet and run to the bars, tugging on them uselessly. Cerene is doing the same, perhaps hoping that the mooring has come loose from the explosion.

Llyron starts to sing and the bars of his cell vibrate. Drogan takes a different approach, placing his palms against the door and singing a sharp, sudden note that makes the bars wrench free and hit the ground. The bars of Llyr’s cell literally disintegrate into powder and it shocks me a bit.

Remind me never to piss him off. I think to myself. I feel like I need to guard even my thoughts around him.

Slade rips his way out and frees Cerene and Aryn bends the bars on his door and runs to me. He’s able to tear the door straight off as the hinges have buckled. I jump straight into his arms, gasping in relief as I feel his body pressed against mine. The moment is so intense tears sting my eyes.

“Right,” I grab his hand and squeeze it. “Let’s get out of here!”

“No,” Llyr tilts his head, listening calmly even though the place is literally falling down around us. “We have to save The Ishana.”

“Seriously?” I can’t help shrieking at him. He’s obsessed, fanatical. Why should I risk my life for them?

“I can feel them,” he says. “They are scared. Not far away either. We have to go deeper.”

“No fucking way,” I stand still and cross my arms. “Not me.”

Cerene shrugs. “Do what you want, but we’re going. I kept them imprisoned. I tortured them. Even if I didn’t respect Llyron as my leader, I would have to go on.”

Her words shock me enough that I can’t speak. I had no idea about this, even though I knew she was famous in all aspects of warfare. I just nod mutely and follow as everyone else charges down the hall.

The end door is massive and thick. Llyr barely touches it and it shatters against his hands. I realize that he’s instinctively using his powers now, not even thinking about the song he needs to sing but letting the sound itself rise from his throat in answer to his will.

Watching him, I can understand why he’s such a legend amongst Reapers. He truly does have a godlike presence.

I don’t know why, but this saddens me. Is it because he can’t possibly survive in this world? The Alliance and the Coalition have been waging their bloody war for centuries now and there is no room for the Reapers to have a future in between them.
