Chapter Seventeen

If the students here would wake up, they might notice her presence.

They might just realize that the same girl they used to taunt with garbage at our orders is back. And more than able to bring them to their knees.

She hasn't though. She isn't bitter. Instead, she's just...living. Thriving.

It's strange to see her smiling here. I've seen it before. In moments where the two of us only existed in our own bubble. But it wasn’t the same.

Thinking back, I don't know that I've ever seen real joy on her face until today. When Jane told them about the festival, and Vixen Rios performing.

I have to be there to watch Phoenix see her idol live. She’s been following the violinist’s career from her first YouTube video. I don’t know how many times she’s mentioned wanting to watch her perform. It’s a dream come true for her.

Every day she proves her words true. She isn't the same girl we used to know.

Back then, she wouldn’t have stood up for herself. Not because she was scared, but because fighting back wouldn’t have been worth it. Charlie made that clear to her. We would have used anything and everything against her, so she tried to ignore us. But when we were alone, she gave me a glimpse of that heat.

That isn’t the same girl that returned to Blisshaven.

Phoenix isn’t here for anyone’s games. She never really was. We might have thought of her as just a pawn to use in our games, but she’s so much more.

I'm still in awe of her fucking with the Queen Bitch for shits and giggles today. Molly shouting out about sexually transmitted diseases has been the talk of the school. I’m sure Vandenberg is plotting her payback, but I dare for anyone to fuck with Nix. In fact, I think we might all enjoy the fireworks.

But she isn't entirely different now, either.

Her threats at lunch reinforced what I already knew. The girl I fell for is still there. There’s still fire in her eyes, and passion in her veins. More so now.

Before, she was weighed down. Never living in happy moments for too long. Even though I know we played a part in that, I think she's always had something more beneath the surface contributing to that.

I know that she was always this tough underneath the surface, but it was a side of her she doesn't allow many people to see. No one is worthy, in my opinion. I'm glad she's shining through now though.

After watching her show in the hallway earlier, I could feel warmth coming back to my heart. Phoenix is still my Blue. I just have to prove it to her.

The determination to do so ignites something in me. I follow that feeling right back to my room. Within seconds I’m pulling up to the blank canvas I haven’t been able to put paint to in months.

Working until my hands hurt and my fingers cramp, I pour every bit of energy into this. This canvas is a representation of something that can only be seen in my own mind.
