I Can't Find a Word For “Still Lives At Home”

4-PERSON EXERCISE

In 2007, three students in a senior-level visual arts class at BYU created the opening credits to the Typophile Film Fest 4. They created a three-minute story of a person's life by using typography as the vehicle, starting with little Ys trying to swim into the center of an O, and ending with the typography of a death certificate, with amazing typographic artistry in between. (You can view the film here: http://typophile.com/node/45002.)

The concept is incredible and literally brings to life the power of typography in our day and age. Today, you're going to use typography to tell a story.

This exercise is done chain-style, where one person starts the chain with an image and passes it to the next person, who adds to the chain and passes it on. The goal is to build a story of single words, one right after another. To do this, you will be taking pictures of found typography, words you have found out in the world. A rudimentary example might be a picture of the word “birth” written on a birth certificate, then a picture of the word “life” written on the box of a board game, then a picture of the word “death” graffitied across a brick wall.

The story will build over time, with no defined direction. Star t by taking a picture of a found word. Give the picture to the next person in the chain. She is to find a word that she feels would go next in the story and photograph it. Either staple the new photo to the first photo, or e-mail the photos to the next person in the chain. You can do this over the course of a predefined period of time, or a certain number of rotations through the group.
