A few days later, a yacht called Marion from Stockholm came in and later Lost Horizon from Madeira with James Dobbs on board, whom we last saw in Oulton Broad. Also moored at the yacht club was a folk boat called Saltpetre belonging to Lillegard and Per Arnessen from Norway, who had been living in Santa Cruz on board their boat for a few years. Friends in Tenerife came with our mail and invited us to visit their home a few days later. They lived at Puerto de la Cruz near the Orotavo Valley, which we drove through on our way to their house on the other side of the island.
Tenerife has startling high peaks and deep verdant valleys. After almost two weeks at sea it was wonderful to see the tropical flowers: the red hibiscus, the white angel’s trumpet, which hang down like bells, the brightly coloured bougainvillea and tulip trees with their beautiful red flowers. On terraces climbing up and down the hills, there were acres and acres of bananas, the fruit green and hanging down with a deep purple flower at the bottom of their stalks.
As we drove higher and higher we went through pine forests and saw many eucalyptus trees, whose trunks had a peeling bark. Another day, Per and Lillegard drove us up Mount Tiede, the dormant volcano, to the Las Canadas crater just below the peak at 6,200 feet. It was a place of such desolation that we felt we could have been on the moon. There was a fantastic assortment of lava rock, which had cooled and frozen into molten shapes. The old lava streams were still visible at the peak, white in the bright sunlight. The film One Million Years BC was being made at that time in the crater and we saw the actors and actresses, the men with long beards, all with long hair and dressed in furry animal skins and 1965 dressing gowns.
The hurricane season was still not over in the Atlantic either. On 20 October we bought a two day old Daily Telegraph with the weather chart and could see: “. . . ex-hurricane Elena in 35 degrees W and 38 degrees North, moving NE and filling, with a low between Madeira and Spain.” It was just the same conditions that we had had when we sailed from Gibraltar – only we had Hurricane Carol . . .
But the time to leave came closer; by the beginning of November the Caribbean hurricane season would be over and it would be safe to continue our voyage. We had our storm jib repaired and new canvas dodgers made on which Bill painted Golden Dragon ’s name before they were secured each side of the cockpit. The stores we ordered were delivered, including a stalk of bananas which were already ripening, but a second with hard, unripe green bananas arrived on the day of our departure: Our last day in Santa Cruz was busy: we took on board all the water
