There is no camera lens in the world capable of capturing the scale of Patagonia’s vast glacial fjords, so photographers try all kinds of stunts to boost their field of view. “I wanted to show just how much ice there was and how locked in we were,” says Outside editor-at- large Grayson Shaffer. “So I just took off my spray skirt and stood up in my kayak—it was a balancing challenge.” With the help of a Gore-Tex Shipman-Tilman expedition grant, Shaffer and veteran Patagonia paddler Reg Lake spent three weeks in 2007 picking their way through an ever-shifting maze of ice to reach this spot near the end of the Peel Inlet. “Changes in the wind or tide could pack it even more and make the channels smaller,” says Shaffer. “It was like constantly trying to pick the right fork in the road.”
