Chapter 24
Right before my eyes
Me, Chubb, Paul, Bruce, Ian, Jimmy, Lee, Ricky and my big drinking mate Meatloaf made the trip to France – the only reason most of the boys went was because they’d already paid for it before the disaster against Croatia at Wembley.
We got to our hotel only to be told they were double-booked, but they’d sorted it for us to stay in a different hotel. The hotel we’d booked was very modern and clean and the one we ended up in was a right old shithole, but we’d stayed in worse. We headed out into Paris and found a bar doing a happy hour on all cocktails until 7pm. Within an hour the barman was letting us mix our own drinks, as he could barely make a vodka and coke. It all got very messy very quickly and Ian was the first to bail out of the drinking.
We all left when the prices went up and went off to find somewhere cheaper. Me and Chubb somehow lost everyone and ended up on the Champs-Elysées. It was a good opportunity to George up, and of course I did. As we walked up this famous road, I told Chubb that I was going to run across to the Arc De Triomphe. I think deep down he was hoping I would get hit by a car, but I dodged and staggered and managed to get across the seven-lane roundabout in one piece, even pulling off some matador moves with my red cape on the oncoming cars. ‘Right, now you’ve got to do it!’ I shouted back. I never in a million years expected him to even attempt it, but he did and it was hilarious. As you know by now, Chubb is not the most graceful on his feet and cars were swerving like fuck to avoid hitting him. The sound of all the horns beeping was deafening, but Chubb kept going and he made it.
‘I’m never doing anything like that again!’ Chubb said. ‘I think we’ll have to…’ I replied. ‘Why’s that?’ Chubb asked. ‘We’ve left the fucking bag on the other side of the road!’ I told him. We ran back together, which was even worse than the first time, but we lived to tell the tale. I couldn’t understand why Paris was known as a romantic city – I’d take a girl there if I wanted to dump her, not propose to her, as it was a stinking dump in most areas from what I could see.
We were well late getting to the ground for the match and as I queued in my George suit to get in, there were many other fans around who’d also arrived late. Once again, a surge started. I got pushed right to the front and was heading straight for these police wearing masks. Fuck! They had tear gas sprays and I caught the full blast of the smoke in my face. I couldn’t see a thing and all I could hear was people screaming and horses running past me.
