Trent

In the end, Amber followed me out of the house. I was more than prepared to throw her over my shoulder and take her with me, but she walked out on her own accord, staring holes in the back of my head the entire time.

Not like I care.

All I care about is keeping her with me and making sure that she’s safe. In the end, she will understand that everything I’m doing is for her. It may take a while for the two of us to get to that point, but I don’t care.

Morgan waved goodbye to us, but now my sister is a distant memory as I drive to my city apartment.

I prefer to live right outside the city limits but having an apartment in town makes it a hell of a lot easier to keep an eye on things. With Amber needing my supervision until we’re married, I can easily leave her at the apartment while I handle what needs to be taken care of.

Mostly, the bastard who tried to kill me and ended up injuring my future wife. Nobody hurts someone close to me, and I will make sure that they pay.

Just thinking about Amber’s limp body after she was shot makes me grip the steering wheel tighter and I take the turn into the parking deck a little faster than necessary.

“You trying to kill me?” Amber snaps from the passenger seat. She’s got both hands in her lap and her face is a little pale from the pain in her shoulder.

“Quite the opposite,” I tell her, pulling into my parking spot and checking all of my mirrors before unlocking the doors. Even though I have guards stationed here 24/7, it’s still a good idea to be careful. You can never be too careful, and when shit hits the fan it’s usually too late to recover.

“Where are we?” She gets out, slamming her car door a little harder than necessary, and looks around. I’m sure that she’s noticing all of the luxury cars we’re parked near, the man in the corner with a gun on his hip, the way my spot is right by the elevator.

“My apartment building.”

“So you have an apartment here?” She comes around the back of my car and joins me at the elevator.

“I own the entire thing. But yes, I have an apartment here and now you do, too.” We step inside the elevator and I use my special key that lets me go to the top floor. After I bought the building I had the top two floors combined into one unit, with high ceilings and gorgeous views. It’s impossible to tell from the outside of the building that I did this, and even most of the residents have no idea.

I don’t want everyone knowing my business, so Amber is the first woman I’ve brought upstairs.

She’s silent as we ascend, but when the elevator stops and the doors slide open, she turns to me, a worried look on her face. “I don’t want to do this.
