• Ensure you have the right contracts in place for every single one of your clients (whether this is your contract, or your client’s template), covering off all the elements we touched on above and incorporating any related documentation (such as proposals or confidentiality agreements).

Systems and procedures:

• Ensure that all new clients are onboarded with the client contract as an absolute first step.

• Monitor and track key dates and key obligations under each contract to ensure they don’t slip. Consider creating a document that tracks contracts in progress, where there are key details that are important to keep on top of (such as review dates, expiry dates, special conditions or departures from your normal approach, milestones, and key terms).

• Put in place client satisfaction surveys to ensure you are regularly surveying your clients to identify any issues that might be brewing.

• Have a system in place to deal with problems adequately and quickly if they do occur, to shut them down before they do damage.

Training:

• Ensure that your staff who deal with customers at the sales, negotiation or sign-on phase are trained in your onboarding systems and processes, in understanding what your template customer agreements say, and in the basics of contract law.
