But about the Son he says …

‘In the beginning, Lord, you laid

the foundations of the earth,

and the heavens are the work of your hands.

They will perish, but you remain;

they will all wear out like a garment.

You will roll them up like a robe;

like a garment they will be changed.

But you remain the same,

and your years will never end’ (Heb. 1.8,10–12).

The important thing to note here is that there is nothing in the original context of these verses to suggest that they apply to the Messiah or to anyone other than God. The writers are clearly discarding a few theological wineskins at this point! Robert Bowman and Ed Komoszewski conclude from passages such as these that ‘the basic confession of early Christianity … turns out to entail the most astonishing and radical claim that any first-century Jew might have made: that the crucified man, Jesus of Nazareth, was Jehovah.’8
