Chapter Nineteen

H ayden’s head was spinning… and it had nothing to do with the Sea Breeze or the Sauvageau Blanc. He’d spent weeks attempting to figure out where Cam’s head was. The meal, the romantic setting… it was all making sense. Cam wanted what Hayden wanted… or did he?

“You want to ‘date’ me? Why now, suddenly, when it seems you’ve done everything to make sure we stay ‘friends’ and nothing more? It’s more than an about face for you.”

“If you don’t want to… that’s okay… I understand.” Cam began withdrawing his hand, but Hayden grabbed his hand back.

“Are you fucking kidding me? Of course, I want to date you. The ‘please’ you ended with was totally unnecessary. Cam, I’m not clear on exactly how to go about dating a straight guy. What are our perimeters? What’s acceptable and what’s not?”

“I’ve got no experience in this situation either. None. The only real dating I did was with Tyler’s mom… not my greatest success. Tyler feels he might be bisexual, but that’s still up in the air. I don’t want to spent time attempting to figure out my sexuality before we move ahead. I’ve been fitted into a straight, military life for the past thirty years. It’s all I know, and…” Cam looked down, then quietly admitted, “and… I want you in my life in a more significant way than you are now… or at least for me to recognize how significant you already are in my life… and in Tyler’s.”

“I suppose we figure things out as we go then?”

“Sounds good to me.” He took Hayden’s other hand in his. “When you’re with Tyler and me… it feels complete. It… it feels like we’re a family. A family that his mom and I should have been, but never were.”

“If you ask me to marry you before we’ve even had sex…”

“Yeah… about that. Not the marrying part… the latter. I’m not sure if I’m ready to go there… yet.”

“I’ll have to allow you to lead…”

“Only if you help me… when I’m ready… if I get ready.”

Hayden’s fingers were caressing Cam’s hands. Cam followed his lead. “Tonight is the occasion I was talking about. I’d want this to be our first date.”

“First date. Hmmm… yes, I believe it is. Would a kiss at the end of our first date be acceptable?”

“This isn’t the end… is it? I was hoping you stick around for a while. I got the fireplace set up if you just wanted to hang out and…”

“Yes. That sounds perfect.”

The two men got up, and Cam led Hayden into the living room. Hayden took a seat, while Cam got the fire going. Cam came back to the couch and removed his shoes, so Hayden followed suit. He felt the other man’s arm over the back of the couch as he sat back. Cam brought his arm down over his shoulders and gently rubbed them.

“I’ve never kissed another guy, Hayden.”

“I see. If you’re thinking about us doing that, it—I mean I think I’m a phenomenal kisser—but that puts a lot of pressure on me.
