5.2 Business Model Canvas (BMC)

5.2.1 Notation

The Business Model Canvasis a method for simple graphical modeling, structuring and optimizing business models. It was first developed in 2010 by Alexander Osterwalder as part of his dissertation (see Osterwalder and Pigneur 2010).

Its range of applications has expanded greatly. The BMC was originally developed to support the strategic accompaniment of startups, but is used by small and medium-sized enterprises and large corporations in all industries. For startups, it is used to move from a business idea to a business model and to further develop and realign the company. For established companies, it supports the analysis of the status quo, the identification of optimization potential and the adaptation to changed customer needs or market requirements (see Lukas 2018). Meanwhile, further areas of application have been opened, such as Data Science for the Business Model Canvas (see Neifer et al. 2020).
