SETTING PERFORMANCE LEVELS PROVIDES A BASIS FOR SOLUTION TRADE-OFFS

Having target and acceptable levels is extremely useful in solution generation. In effect, it represents a trade-off range that can be used to compare alternative solutions. The cost differential between achieving the target and acceptable performance levels can be quite significant.

For example, a Web-based, off-the-shelf (otherwise known as ‘cloud’) solution may be a lot cheaper to buy and maintain than a custom-built solution, but does not meet the target performance level. However, if the cloud solution meets or is better than the acceptable performance level, you can consider cost and performance together, to decide which solution offers the best value. It is also possible that the acceptable level might is revisited if other dimensions, such as ease of use, prove to be sufficiently compelling. The key point is that you have defined the acceptable level in advance, so deviating from it is a conscious and visible trade-off choice.

Always ensure that you define performance criteria prior to generating solutions options. Generating them on the fly, alongside the solutions, means that they are more likely to reflect the solution rather than shape it.
