“So, what made you change your mind about us?” Adam asked as they lay curled in bed hours later. “Not that I’m complaining, of course.”

“I guess I just wanted to do something for myself for a change.” She’d probably regret the decision in the morning, but for now, she was content to lay in his arms and savor the moment.

“So, I’m a treat to yourself.”

She laughed as she turned towards him. Considering she’d just had the best sex of her life, it was an apt description. But it hadn’t just been great sex. There’d been a real connection, too. She’d never felt so in sync with someone before and hoped he felt the same.

“You are. I guess I’ve always been conscious of how my actions reflect on my family and just once, I wanted to throw caution to the wind.”

“You’re really close to your family, aren’t you?”

“I am. Perhaps it’s because we worked together at the hotel for so many years, but we’ve always been close.” She hadn’t realized it then, but she really hit the jackpot with her parents. While other parents left the rearing of their children to nannies or daycare, her parents had basically been on top of her and her brother practically twenty-four seven. Yes, they’d been overbearing at times, but she and Robbie had always known that their parents would be there for them. “How about you? I know you aren’t close to your parents, but how about your siblings?”

“I’m really close to my sister, Martha. We were only a grade apart at school, so we were always tight. Doug, on the other hand, is seven years younger than me. By the time he was in the first grade, I was already going to my grandfather’s factory after school. We get along fine, but I’m not sure if we would’ve even kept in touch if it weren’t for Martha always inviting us to meet up.”

There was a pause before he spoke again. “My dad paid off my dream school to reject me.” She stilled, and he continued, “I wanted to study chemistry to work on the technical side of the business while my dad wanted me to study business at his alma mater. I made a deal with my parents that if I maintained a three-point-eight GPA and was accepted into my dream school, they’d allow me to study chemistry.” He shook his head. “I don’t think they ever expected me to make it. I’d never been much of a student, but I studied really hard and got in. But they had other plans.”

“That’s horrible!”

He shrugged. “At least, I know what he did. If it wasn’t for the family’s lawyer accidentally cc’ing me on the dean’s thank-you letter to my dad, I would’ve never found out. Hell. I wouldn’t have even believed it.” He laughed bitterly. “I’d actually been looking forward to working with my dad and putting my plans for the company into motion.”

“Have you spoken with your parents since?”

“I usually see them once a year at my sister’s birthday party, but I actually just talked to my dad last month.
