Chapter 21

Althea

Grass was supposed to be prickly and poke. I brushed my cheek against the grass, unclear of why it caressed versus poked. I squinted one eye open only to immediately shut it. Brightness encouraged me to shut my eyes tight again. Instead, my head pounded with a nauseating amount of pain. It felt a thousand times worse than the hangover I got with Case when we decided to binge drink our problems away one night.

Case’s bright smile and sparking brown eyes flashed in my mind. My lips twisted into a smile at the memory of that night. Until the events of the past day caught up with me. It felt like losing him all over again. The stabbing pain in my heart returned, and my fire flared with my growing anger. He didn’t deserve that death. People were always dying for me and I couldn’t save them …

Marcus.

He had collapsed to the ground, spasming, looking like a fish out of water. His eyes glossed over with pain, and he kept twisting his body as if it would rid him of his agony. Instead, the dark hooks of death had him in their clutch. Every twist and grunt of pain prompted me to flutter my hands over him. There had to be something I could do. There had to be.

Then the answer had come swiftly and challenging. The icy power inside of me that I didn’t know how to control, or where it came from, surged forth. The power stifled my fire and choked me. Everything became hazy. Marcus called out for me. I wanted to comfort him, but I felt like I was underwater, unable to speak. He shouldn’t die alone; he never let me die that way.

A powerful blow to my heart knocked the wind from my lungs, and I wrapped my arms around my stomach. My stomach clenched and retch forward. Losing Marcus? After losing Case? I couldn’t handle that.

I remembered Marcus talking to me. Whispering something. The words came but slipped away before I could grasp them. I wanted to hate Marcus with everything I had. I blamed him for Case’s death when I knew it was on me.

“Stand,” a cold, empty voice demanded above me. I couldn’t even if I wanted to.

“Stand or die,” the voice intoned again.

I wanted to roll over so that he could get a better shot, but the fire inside of my body fought that. Instead, when the end of his spear poked at my ribs, anger so hot that it burned me inside exploded outwards.

I opened my eyes. My fire burned hotter and hotter. I would lose control again.

“The fire-starter, we meet yet again.”

I stood with the spear of the first fey, with long, blond hair, above my heart. He wasn’t the one who spoke. A fey with that had rich chocolate brown hair talked again. His silver eyes watched me as my fire raged forward. It sizzled under my skin. Ready to burn him alive.

“Careful, fire-starter. You wouldn’t want to hurt Marcus.
