I can’t stop talkin’ about love…

Bldddyouboop, bldddyouboooooop!

Yahh, yahhhhh!

We fell, panting, on the floor.

“Why’d you let it slip now?” I asked him as I caught my breath. “About Cleveland.”

He laughed until he was hoarse.

“What?”

“You just won’t let up, will you?”

I shrugged.

“Wanna fire the BAR?”

“You have a BAR?”

“My dad brought it back from the war. I got some tracer ammo a few years ago.”

Likowski went to a closet with a trapdoor to the attic and used a stepladder to fetch the Browning automatic rifle—an illegal weapon as far as civilians were concerned. We went out into the small meadow in front of the house, Likowski jostling the ammo belt into position and clicking the gun to full automatic. Then he unloaded it into the sky, with Zeppelin still echoing in my head and the Death Wish making it all incredibly beautiful and overwhelming, the tracer lines like reverse-flying meteors set against the Milky Way.

When he was done, he handed me the weapon. “I’m going to need your help tomorrow.”

“All right,” I said, knowing not to press too much.

Then Likowski put another belt into the BAR, and I took my turn strafing the heavens. I owned guns—you’d be an idiot to live here and not have one—but almost never fired them. The last time I did, it was for shotgun pruning: a drooping Doug fir branch dozens of feet up an old-growth tree was blocking my view of the ocean from the hot tub. I bought four boxes of shells and blasted the base of the branch with my 20-gauge shotgun until it snapped and fell. As cool as that was, firing the BAR was immensely more satisfying.
