CHAPTER THIRTY

Wednesday 7:30 a.m.

Derek moped as he walked into Dr. Chelsea’s office. When he texted he was on his way, the doc gave him the code for the office door. His assistant wouldn’t be there, and the foyer would be locked. Usually, when he had to see the doc, the office bustled with patients. Today an eerie silence greeted him.

“Doc. I’m here,” Derek yelled out walking towards the doctor’s private office.

“I’m back here.”

Derek followed Dr. Chelsea’s voice. As he opened the door, Dr. Chelsea practiced his golf putt. “Really? This is what your psychology degree is doing for you?”

Dr. Chelsea shifted his weight, readjusting his grip on his club. “Most games are won in the short stroke. The elusive putt.” He gently tapped the ball. He leaned slightly to the right hoping the motion would steer the ball as it rolled down the makeshift green.

Derek snickered when the ball stopped just short of the cup. “Well, looks like you have a lot of work ahead of you.”

Dr. Chelsea took the seat across from his favorite patient. “Yes, I do. This is why I spent a ton of money on this little set up.”

“You actually spent money on this?” Derek laughed as he pointed to the putting green. “You’re a sucker, aren’t you?”

“Pfft. A small price to pay to hone my skills.” Dr. Chelsea rose from his seat. “How’s the head?”

“Fine. Like I already told you.” He tried to move his head around, dodging the doctor.

“Stop. What are you five?” Dr. Chelsea grabbed the sides of Derek’s head. Gently and slowly, he dragged his fingers across the back of his scalp.

Derek tried to remain completely still.

“Doesn’t hurt, huh?” Dr. Chelsea asked as he came around and stood in front of his patient. Lifting Derek’s chin, the doctor used a pen light to test his eyes.

“Is this really necessary?” Derek asked as he blinked.

“Have you had any visions or nightmares since you hit your head?”

Derek started to say something.

“Don’t lie to me, either.”

“I don’t lie, Doc.”

“Sure, you don’t. What’s been going on?”

Derek squirmed under the stare of his friend. “I’m still having nightmares.”

Dr. Chelsea sat back in his seat. “Before the bump on the head?”

“Yes.”

“Has there been anything new since the bump? Any other odd symptoms?”

“No. Maybe. I’m working another case. One which involves Congressman Jackson and some high-powered people.”

“I know you wouldn’t think of taking a break.”

Derek frowned. “No. That’s why I came back early from my forced vacation. I can’t stand sitting around doing nothing.”

“I shouldn’t have cleared you to work. I think you need more time. If you’re still having nightmares from the Josiah Craig case, you need more time to heal.”

Derek leaned forward, placing his elbows on his knees. Of all the people he can trust, Dr. Chelsea is one of them. “The nightmares aren’t about Josiah.”

Dr. Chelsea raised an eyebrow at him but remained silent.

“I have nightmares about the current case. Or at least I think it’s about the case.”

“Explain. This is where the maybe comes in, right?”

Sighing, Derek sat back.
