Chapter 12

I DIDN’T KNOW HOW MUCH time had passed, but I couldn’t hear anything except for Sebastian’s and my breathing, and maybe the thudding of my own heart.

“I think we’re safe, but I can go out to take a look,” Sebastian said, pulling away from me and pushing one of the sides of our hideout open to make it bigger.

“No! Wait.” I caught his hand, tugging him back.

We could wait for a while longer.

I took a look around. My gaze fell on the bag in the corner.

Sebastian’s bag.

How had it gotten here? He hadn’t had it with him when we’d been running from Martinelli.

Had he been hiding here for a while? Was that how he’d managed to find this place?

“Let me at least make some more space for us,” he said.

I gave him a small nod.

When he finished, he sat down on the floor, pulling his knees up.

“Why does Martinelli think you care about me?” I asked what I’d wanted to ask for a while now but hadn’t had the strength to do.

Sebastian looked away from me. “Because I tried to protect you from him.”

“How?”

“When you took that photo of Oliver and me, he wanted to kill you. I did everything I could to stop him. He thought that no one would care if something happened to you because you weren’t one of the rich kids.”

“But why? What was so important about that photo?”

“Was it you?” His gaze met mine. “Did you reveal all that about Oliver at school?”

I bit down on my lip.

Should I lie to him? Would he change his mind about wanting to protect me?

I had no idea why he was still doing it, especially if he was putting his life at risk.

I nodded. “You weren’t really nice to me at school, so...”

“I get it. I guess I would’ve done the same if I were you.”

“How did you know Martinelli was going to attack me?”

“I thought he might want to do it to hurt me or lure me out, so I followed you.”

“You followed me?” My eyebrows shot up.

“Just to keep you safe.”

“Will you now finally tell me what’s really going on here? Because I don’t understand anything. I thought you were Oliver Martinelli. Are you even a Martinelli?”

He shook his head.

“Then what the hell?”

He sighed. “When my mother died, I was all alone. There wasn’t anyone who could take me in, so I ended up in foster care. My foster parents... I changed more than a few, but the last ones... They were... They were monsters. I managed to run away, but I didn’t have any money and was living on the streets.

“One day, I saw a bag just standing on a low stone wall while a group of people stood farther away. I hadn’t eaten anything for a couple of days, so I thought that if I snatched the bag, I might find some money or a snack, or something to sell. So I ran and grabbed the bag, but it was a mistake. The bag was full of drugs, and the Martinellis were after me.
