Those passengers seated in the upper deck had been able to witness the consternation at the cockpit door, and now the word had passed throughout the rest of the plane. Hushed conversations took place, and the atmosphere was fraught. Milton left Thorsson at the door while he descended the stairs to go and get Huxley. The flight attendant who served the lower deck was in the foyer, pale faced.

“What’s going on?”

Milton took her to the side. “The pilot’s locked himself in the cockpit.”

Her mouth fell open. “God.”

“You need to keep everyone calm.”

“Why’s he done something like that?”

“Listen,” Milton said firmly. “It’s Genevieve, isn’t it?”

“Yes.”

“You need to do your job, Genevieve. Make sure the passengers don’t panic. I’m going to get it sorted, but it’ll be more difficult if everyone’s excited. Do you understand?”

“What do I tell them?”

“There’s been a malfunction,” he said, “and we’re fixing it now. All right?”

She nodded.

Milton gestured to the door to Huxley’s suite. “I need to see him. Is the door open?”

“Yes,” she said, “but he’s not alone.”

He was going to ask her to elaborate, but he remembered seeing the two young women follow him inside earlier. Genevieve’s shrug and the little shake of her head told him all he needed to know.

Milton knocked on the door. “It’s John. Can I come in?”

He heard muffled conversation from inside.

“Tristan,” Milton said, “I need to speak to you.”

It took another few seconds before the door was unlocked and opened. Huxley peered out from behind it, wearing a dressing gown with a monogram of his initials on the breast. Milton glanced over his shoulder to see two young women sitting up in bed, the sheets pulled up to their necks.

Huxley noticed Milton’s eyes and stepped forward, pulling the door closed behind him. “What is it?”

“There’s a problem. The pilot’s locked himself in the cockpit and changed course. We should be on a northwestern track. We’re heading northeast.”

“Heading where?” He paused, working out where the new course might lead. “Jesus. Pakistan?”

“That’s what I’m worried about.”

The colour drained out of Huxley’s face. “Oh, shit.”
