When you bring guys together, it is good to have them focus on external things, like changing a car tire, while discussing deeper issues. The idea is that face-to-face encounters can be scary. Review a movie when you are side-by-side, not face-to-face. Men relate best when they can sit side-by-side, focusing on external issues, so that freedom of thought without judgment can be experienced.

Outdoor activities (hunting, fishing, photography, archery, skiing) are great ways for mixing generations. There are special and exciting stories and memories to be built and shared in the outdoors. One of the newer ministries called Fathers in the Field helps guys connect and provides resources for boys of single parents who want a mentor.6

A GOOD EXAMPLE

When I first started in ministry, there was an older business leader who was about ready to retire. Bob was a mature Christian with a heart for mission work. We went out to lunch one day and he stated, “I really don’t know what I’m going to do in retirement. I’ve sold this business and I think I’m going to get very bored without having a mission in life.” Earlier he had told me that he just built a fully equipped large wood shop.

I thought for a minute and said, “What percent of the kids in your neighborhood live in a single-parent home?” Bob looked up from his bowl of soup and said, “I would guess about forty to fifty percent of the kids don’t have a dad at home.” I mentioned to him the idea of turning his shop into an after-school woodshop for these abandoned kids.

Within a month, he handed out flyers in the neighborhood and met with some mothers. In the beginning, he had around half a dozen boys show up on Wednesday afternoons at his shop. He told the mothers that he would be sharing a little Scripture, helping the boys develop their character, and encouraging them in their schooling.
