Creating the Physical Connection
To create a connection between two machines, each machine has to have a network adapter that accommodates that connection. Between the two machines is a hub (a passive device that simply makes connections) or a switch (an active device that includes intelligence for performing tasks such as diagnostics). Remember that routers are used to create connections between two networks.
The machines use either wires or radio waves to create the connection. When a machine uses wires to make a connection, the cable has to adhere to the requirements for making the connection at the requested speed. This means using Cat 5, 5e, or 6 cabling. The Cat 5e cabling is acceptable if you want to create a gigabit (1000-Mb/s) network. However, to get the best response from a gigabit network, use Cat 6 cabling instead. Even though you can use Cat 5 cabling for networks, it doesn’t respond well to high speeds and you won’t see the full throughput your network is able to provide.
When a machine uses radio waves to create a connection, it must use a signal that provides the appropriate functionality and strength for the setup. The “Understanding WLAN Essentials” section of this chapter provides additional insights into wireless connectivity.
