Part III

The Unity of Knowledge and Action: Knowledge Is the Beginning of Action and Action Is the Culmination of Knowledge

For Zhu Xi, there were two worlds, the abstract world of Reason and the concrete physical world. For Wang Yangming, however, there was only one, the world upon which he had bestowed meaning. That is to say, neither the world of Reason nor the material world could generate meaning unless empowered by the projections and conceptual systems of the subjective awareness of the self. Consequently, knowledge was the search for and establishment of meaning (knowledge is the beginning of action), in itself a kind of action; while action was the revelation and completion of meaning (action is the culmination of knowledge), and was thus inseparable from knowledge. When Wang Yangming refers to “knowledge” and “action” he is referring to the developmental process of constructing this kind of world of meaning. Knowledge is the construction of a set of views on the world, on life and on values that are consistent with the Way of the sages; action is the implementation and deepening of one’s cognition and conceptualization through interaction with other people and with the external world and others.
