Packaging the Kit

This can range from placing various items within a survival kit to having a separate container for your first-aid equipment. I sometimes use commercially available bags and strip them of the items and start over with my own selection.

On other occasions, I will find a bag that accommodates what I want to pack. It should be noted that anything that can be ruined when wet should be packaged in zip-lock bags or other waterproof containers. For some larger kits, I double-bag the entire kit in large freezer zip-lock bags.

If you are making a kit for water-borne operations, give some thought to a hard waterproof case. Some first-aid kits come in hard waterproof containers but don’t necessarily contain your choice of contents. If the container works for your needs, strip it and start over with your selection of needed items. Some small waterproof containers such as the “Otter Box” are available from water sports shops or Campmor. Available in various sizes and configurations, they come in yellow, black and clear, which are nice, as you can see the contents.
