Chapter 6

Nina hummed as she wandered through the grocery store, wondering if Buck would prefer chicken or beef. Then she thought about the muscles in his arms and added both to her cart. The man was large, but he ate healthy foods, so she grabbed a bag of pearled barley and quinoa, ingredients for roasted vegetables and salads. She should ask Jinx for recipes. James was about the same size as Buck, so Jinx would have plenty of advice on feeding a man as large and active as Buck.

She was just reaching for a bottle of olive oil when she hesitated. Would he even be around to eat all of this food? She loved the idea of cooking for him, but what if he wanted some time alone? What if he needed to work? He went off and did mysterious stuff during the day, and came to her house every night. They’d been together for over a week now and things didn’t seem to be cooling off. Just the opposite, in fact.

And what did she want?

Okay, that was a no brainer, she thought as she stared ahead. She wanted Buck. Forever. She loved the big lug! She loved him more than she’d ever thought she could love anyone. He was sweet and tender, patient, and…good grief, he was funny! Not to mention, he was the most amazing lover!

“Excuse me.”

Nina jumped, startled to discover that she’d been standing in the aisle, staring blankly at the various mustard options. “I’m so sorry,” she stepped back, glanced apologetically at the man who reached around her to grab a bottle of spicy brown mustard.

“No problem,” he replied, tossing the mustard into his basket before moving off down the aisle.

Nina sighed and looked around, trying to remember what she was going to cook for dinner that night. And it suddenly occurred to her that she wasn’t even sure if Buck would be joining her for dinner. Of course, he’d come over for dinner every night over the past week. But should she assume that he’d be over for dinner tonight as well?

She probably shouldn’t make assumptions, Nina told herself.

“I’ll talk to him tonight,” she told herself.

Nina finished her shopping and paid for her groceries, then loaded them into her car. She was distracted, but as she slipped behind the driver’s seat, something niggled at her. Looking around, she tried to figure out why she felt a whisper of unease.

Slipping her sunglasses on, she started her car and backed out of the parking space while scanning her surrounding for…something. She wasn’t sure what was wrong. She just knew that something didn’t feel right.

As she drove away, Nina thought she recognized a minivan in her rearview mirror that she’d seen earlier today. But that was crazy, right? A bad guy wouldn’t drive a minivan! Nope, criminals drove Lamborghinis and Ferraris! Every bad guy in every James Bond movie drove a sexy, fast car! Not a minivan!

Still, Nina drove through several other neighborhoods, circling back to make sure that the blue minivan wasn’t still behind her before she finally drove home.
