Chapter 14

Caught on Camera

Cynthia dozed all the way home, only stirring as we reached the outskirts of Meli when I was forced to slam on the brakes to avoid colliding with the back of Panos’ tractor. The tractor’s creeping pace prevented me from overtaking and Cynthia sighed in irritation at this last minute delay. Pulling off into one of his fields, Panos waved cheerily and Cynthia exhaled in relief, excited at the prospect of soon being reunited with the baby.

“Victor, I forgot to ask, I need an enormous favour. The new rep Terry has let me down at the last moment and he can’t do the authentic Greek village taverna experience tomorrow evening. I know it is terribly short notice…”

“I did warn you he appeared unreliable.”

“I should have listened to you. Anyway he’s rather left me in the lurch; I wouldn’t ask if I wasn’t desperate. You know how popular the evening is,” Cynthia wheedled.

“I’d really rather not. You know I don’t rep at nights Cynthia, I have always been resolute on that point,” I objected. I’d had quite enough of working unsociable hours during the winter I had cheffed in Nikos’ taverna.

“I’ll have to do it myself then, but I just can’t bear the thought of leaving Anastasia at bed-time.” A pitiful sob rounded off Cynthia’s words and her pleading tone stirred some sympathy in me; I felt myself weakening. The taverna involved was one I hadn’t actually visited yet and I was quite keen to try it out, though preferably not in the company of a coachload of tourists seeking a genuine Greek experience. Sensing my hesitation Cynthia added, “The food is supposed to be really excellent and you’ll get a free meal of course.”

“Can I take Barry along with me?” I asked thinking at least it would give him an excuse to escape the clutches of the terrible Trouts.

“Of course, I’m sure he’d love to join you, having my parents around is making him crabby. I’ll let the taverna know to prepare an extra plate. I really do appreciate it Victor.”

“Just this once Cynthia, don’t go expecting it to be regular thing. It’s a good job it doesn’t involve any research.”

“No research required at all Victor,” Cynthia assured me before dropping her bombshell. “I’m sure you’ll be a natural leading the Greek dancing and smashing a few plates.”

I assumed an expression of complete diffidence, refusing to give Cynthia the satisfaction of letting her know I was aware that she had well and truly suckered me in.
