CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“Isn’t universe such an incredibly amazing thing?”

“You are so unbelievably lucky that you didn’t get your ass shot off.”

Even if Brynn’s eyes were closed and all voices had been disguised, it would still be crystal clear whom had just said what. Seated across from Dedra and Caitlin at their usual back corner table at the Golden Biscuit, Becket napping comfortably at her feet, she had to admit that both observations—as incongruent as they might seem—were nevertheless equally valid.

It was exactly one week ago that she had joined Jake on their high-stakes road trip to Newport. Once back, she had texted both friends to let them know she was still alive and had much to tell—but wanted to do so in person. Somehow, typing things like “mini-harem” and “lines of coke” into her phone didn’t seem like a smart thing to do. Although, as she had just discovered over the past forty minutes, actually speaking the words out loud was only slightly less jarring. And judging from their wide-eyed expressions, Dedra and Caitlin couldn’t agree more.

“I need another shot of chamomile tea after hearing all of this,” Caitlin said as she topped off her cup with the contents of a small silver pot.

“And I need a shot of … well, nothing that I’m going to find at a coffee shop,” Dedra added wryly.

Caitlin took a sip of tea and savored it for a moment before resuming the conversation. “So what do you think? Are there more undercover investigation adventures ahead?”

Dedra glared at her in disbelief. “Seriously? She narrowly escaped becoming a permanent barbie doll toy for—what was the big, scary one’s name?”

“Yolana,” Brynn said helpfully.

“Right. And that’s just for starters.” Dedra shuddered, though a smile was slowly making its way onto her lips. “But man, what a story.”

“It’s all true.”

“That’s what makes it all the more crazy.”

“Have you been in touch with Jake since all of this happened?” Caitlin asked.

Brynn’s stomach tightened. “No. And I don’t plan to be.”

“Why not? It seems like you two ended up really hitting it off.”

“Let’s just say we made the best of an … unusual … situation. Without actually saying anything directly, I think we both know that we live in two different worlds, and it’s best to keep it that way.”

“You sure about that?” Dedra asked. “You are both in law enforcement.”

Brynn scrunched her eyebrows. “Wait, weren’t you the one telling me that I was in way over my head when I agreed to help Jake?”

“I don’t recall saying that exactly. But yes, pretending to be his girlfriend for a weekend hosted by a mafia drug lord was a bit much.”

Brynn lifted her hands as if to say: See?

“But,” Dedra continued, “that’s not to say you wouldn’t be the very best person to analyze the evidence if that weekend had turned deadly.”

Caitlin gasped. “Subtle as always!”

“I was going to add that I’m thrilled it didn’t turn out this way. But that’s the nature of undercover work—especially when you’re trying to take down major league players like Jake is doing.
