“Okay, are you ready?” Morgan asked her parents. “Ready,” Mom and Dad said while holding each other.

The trail to Angels Landing

“When I say three, kiss!” Morgan looked through the camera lens. She adjusted the zoom. “One. Two. Three.”

Her parents looked at each other and then kissed.

Morgan snapped the picture.

“It’s too bad we didn’t have romantic music playing in the background,” James joked.

We went out there?!

“What do you mean?” Dad said. “I thought we did!”

“That was perfect,” Morgan said. “I got you two smooching and all of Zion Canyon in the background.”

“That was perfect,” Mom agreed. “Just as it was when your father and I first met here twenty years ago.”

“You really met right here?” James asked.

“Right here, on this very trail,” Dad said. “We both hiked up here on our day off.”

“I was working at the park visitor center,” Mom said. “I think I had seen your dad there a few times, but we never spoke.”

“I was working at the lodge,” Dad said. “When I saw your mom up here, I knew it was my lucky day.”

“Kind of like destiny,” Morgan said.

“That’s right, destiny,” Mom agreed. “Come here, you two.” She hugged her twins as they all stood together on the top of Angels Landing.

“It’s amazing up here, isn’t it?” Morgan asked, looking down at the canyon below.

“There’s a bus on the road!” James called out. “It looks so tiny.”

“Don’t get too close to that cliff,” Mom warned, reaching for James’s arm.

“I’m all right,” James said.

“It’s only a 1,500-foot drop,” Dad said. “Straight down. You can understand our worry.”

The family looked around at the view. From the top of Angels Landing, they could see all of Zion Canyon, including the Weeping Rock Trail. Across the canyon were the Great White Throne and Cable Mountain. Farther up the canyon, the cliffs got closer together, and the road disappeared at the Temple of Sinawava.

“That’s where we’re going to be tomorrow?” Morgan asked, looking toward the end of the road.

“Actually, the day after,” Dad said. “It will take us two days to get there and then out of the Narrows.”

“We would have been going there today,” Mom said, “but the rangers recommended against it. There’s still a chance of thunderstorms this afternoon, believe it or not.” Mom looked up at the clear skies. “So there’s a chance of high water. It’s too dangerous to be in there today.”
