Chapter 18

The next day, after the beast brought the usual bowl of gruel, the boy ate none of it. As hungry as he was, he couldn’t afford to use the food for anything but his plan for escape. Even if it meant starving.

The dark, dank prison had taken hold of his mind, and he sensed the pull of turning into a monster himself, of giving into the insanity that poked at him. And he knew if he didn’t kill the beast himself or escape these prison walls, his days were numbered. The beast had grown angrier with each visit, perhaps even hungry for the boy’s flesh. It would only be a matter of time.

He applied the entire bowl of gruel to the outside of three of the bars. It was sure to dry like cement, just like it had before.

The sun beamed down with a scorching ferocity as though it meant to destroy every living thing. Not a cloud in the sky.

Perfect.
